No More Complaining About Winter

Posted on 13. Sep, 2008 by Karen in Misc

I live in Michigan and have lived here all of my life.  So I’m really familiar with winter.  It’s the scourge of the Midwest — or so I’ve looked at it that way.  Oh it’s not that this season is so bad in and of itself — it’s that it lasts so long.

And even though I should be used to it after 57 years, I still complain about winter.  It’s just something we do here.  Well today I made a pledge to stop complaining.  Because when you really look at it, Michigan winters are nothing compared to the coastal extremes that played out in Texas this weekend with Hurricane Ike.

As I watched the news over the last few days as this massive storm wrecked havoc in the Caribbean and hit Texas with a vengeance, I changed my perspective.  I’m blessed to just have long winters to deal with.

Big Ike shifted more than Texas.

Funny, but I’ve never lived further north than Dallas, so I’m always wondering “Why do all those crazy people stay up there with all the snow?” or “Why do all those crazy people stay on the west coast, with all those earthquakes?” It never occurred to me until just now, that you guys are all asking “Why do those crazy people stay down there with all those hurricanes?” I guess it’s just whatever you are used to.

Karen, I have lived in Michigan the last 20 years. I was in Hurricane Alicia BY MYSELF in my Houston townhouse back in the early eighties. Believe me, the snows of Michigan are minor as compared to the rain, wind and distruction of a Hurricane.

Also, Michigan has four seasons, as compared to two in Texas: Hot and Monsoon. I’ll take Michigan’s climate any day.

    Take it easy.

Becky–it really is all about what our experience has been. Yes sometimes I do wonder why people stay where the weather is so extreme–and yet complain along the way about what we have up here. But my perspective sure did shift this weekend. Thanks for sharing yours!

Yvonne–I can imagine being in a hurricane by myself. OMG! I can see why you like Michigan’s weather better although I might debate you on whether we really have 4 seasons. Sometimes it seems like we just slide out of winter into summer without much of what you can call spring. But summer and fall in Michigan are beautiful.
