Midlife Tripping Down the Yellow Brick Road
Posted on 07. Apr, 2008 by Karen in Misc
If you visit Midlife’s A Trip often enough you soon learn that I’m a major fan of the movie “The Wizard of Oz”. Since I was a little munchkin myself, I’ve loved the story, Dorothy’s journey and, of course, the ruby slippers. But this past year, I started to see my journey through midlife as something akin to the journey through the land of Oz.
Everything is new and unexpected, as it was for Dorothy in Oz. Baby Boomers like me are literally making up this new age of aging as we go along. Like Dorothy, I’ve learned some lessons, acquired new skills, faced unexpected obstacles, scary situations and made great new friends. As for the Wicked Witch, bless her pointed head—she’s the other part of me that says play it safe and go back to what I know. I’m in the process of melting her right now.
For the record, our generation is more than just the play-it-safers. We are blazing new trails in this new age of aging. For me, the Wizard of Oz offers some fun metaphors that I’m clearly making up as I go along. But I figure if it helps me get from where I am now to where I truly want be, what the heck.
If this is all too silly for you, so send the flying monkeys after me. But if you want to lighten up your trip, hang around for the 3-minute video snapshot of Dorothy’s journey to make you smile on a Midlife Monday.

That’s really fun! It’s interesting how when you change the music and do some editing how different things seem. I’m also a big fan of the “The Wizard of Oz.” But it wasn’t until I read “Wicked” and just recently saw the play, that I realized what a biased story it was.
When we see the story through the eyes of Elphaba, we start to question just what it is to be a wicked witch. I guess that’s just how life is, we all have our own point of view, and that even changes as we grow older and see life from a different perspective.

My 2-year old LOVES the Wizard of Oz. And asks me to sing with her every chance she gets. Here’s a video of us singing Over the Rainbow:

Ah yes, the Wizzard of Oz and Middle Age . . . I don’t think we’re in Kansas any more.
