Michelle Obama

Today I met Michelle Obama. She was in town for a series of events, several of which were in my county which is the swing county in the swing state of Michigan. The event I attended was mostly women, from our Governor Jennifer Granholm to a school teacher from Flint — all glad for the chance to get to know a little more about the woman who would be First Lady.
Now I know there’s been controversy swirling around Michelle almost since she hit the campaign trail. Believe what you want from the news clips and sound bites but this is what I saw and heard today:
- A woman who is authentic.
- A woman of conviction.
- A woman who is a devoted mother.
- A woman who is brilliant, focused and knowledgeable about the issues facing our country.
- A woman who knows that she and her family have a difficult road to travel and that the word “normal” no longer applies to them
- A woman who passionately cares about others.
- A woman who says what she means and means what she says.
- A woman who brought a smile and sweet sigh to the audience who listened to her talk about how she and Barack met.
- A woman who is successful in her own right.
- A woman who is committed to the husband she loves and committed to their journey together to help bring unity and progressive change to America.
What Michelle Obama is not – is the shy, retiring type. Campaign handlers may try to “soften” her image over the coming months of campaigning but today I think I got a little glimpse of the real Michelle.
Lucky me.

Very cool. I love that she is critical of this country. Anyone who isn’t critical of America is living in a dream world. I hate the spin and the ‘handling’ that she has to endure. Let her be. I hope that when Obama gets into office he doesn’t go all conservative the way presidents tend to do. I want him, instead, to shake things up like crazy.

Rhea–
I agree. The problem with getting into the White House is that you have to move to the right to get things done in Congress. But maybe that can change too.
Michelle just came across genuine and down to earth. She could run for president herself except that America really isn’t ready for that opportunity.
