Real People Losing Home Sweet Home

Posted on 21. Aug, 2008 by Karen in Politics

Recently I learned that a friend of our family is selling his house to avoid going into foreclosure. Why? Because he simply can’t afford it anymore.  It’s not because he’s irresponsible or spends his money on things other than his mortgage.  Like many real people out here, shit just happened.

In our friend’s case, his wife died of cancer in her 30’s leaving him a single parent with the house they had purchased together.  All this personal tragedy as our country’s economy took a nose-dive.  So this young man was left with some hard choices.  Keep the house or move to a rental and be able to provide a decent life for his children. He’s decided that the right choice for his family means selling their home — a place with special memories and a lot of sweat equity.

But there are politicians who don’t seem to understand how tough times can cause real people, like our friend and many others to have to give up “home sweet home”. So who’s out of touch with reality.  Take a look:

McCain is a fool. Reward people who were “irresponsible”? Hello! If you bought any time after August 2005 and needed to sell in the following years, you were caught upside down. The market turned down and lots of people got caught in the mess. It’s just bad luck. Just like folks who bought between, say, 1995 and sold before 2005 made a killing. Dumb good luck.

*shudder* The last thing we need is yet another clueless wonder in the White House….

My husband and I are just about to close on a new home in Royal Oak, MI, but we’re not doing it without a healthy dose of fear. Granted, prices are down and we can afford a better home than we could have a few years ago — and goodness knows there were plenty of homes to choose from — but a job loss or illness can turn anyone’s life financial upside-down in an instant. Sure wish we had millions in the bank and so many houses that we can’t even remember them all, like our buddy McCain.

Rhea–I certainly can’t disagree with you about McCain. And as someone who bought in early 2005, I feel like I’m super-glued to my house now because I’ll lose everything I put into it if I sell. Bad luck. Dumb McCain.

Julie–my sister lives inn Royal Oak and there are a lot of foreclosures going on there. It’s good for people like you and your husband who are buying but for others–such sad times. We just all need 7 homes like McCain and then we wouldn’t have to worry.
