Line Up for Hatred
Posted on 15. Oct, 2008 by Karen in Politics
From time to time I actually convince myself that we’ve made progress as a country and have moved beyond the blatant racism experienced by my parents and grandparents. But then that big reality check hits me in the face — this time in the form of this shocking video from a rally for Sarah Palin in Johnstown, Pennsylvannia last week:
Am I just naive to think we can get past our past?

This video shows the powerful impact of ignorance and hatred. I can feel it in my stomach when those people spoke the words they did, but what’s worse, I felt my anger rising. I wonder how many of those people read books, newspapers, or anything? How few of the ones yelling at the camera have allowed themselves the pleasure of exploring or appreciating other cultures, foods, ideas?….And then I think about my highly educated college friend, who is a lawyer, who spouted things that mirrored what these people were saying. Maybe not in as extreme a fashion, but mentioning Rev. Wright and communism and affirmative action with antipathy. All ignorant of the truth.
Since moving south, my family has immersed itself in learning about our country’s history. We’ve seen recreations of homesteads and battles and speeches. I don’t understand how we can go back down the wrongful paths of the past without suffering irreparable harm to our spirits and our society. What concerns me the most is that our own stupidity may be the undoing of our great country. Thanks for sharing the video. I pray that it represents a shallow town and does not represent us as a nation.

Karen, as sick as it makes me feel to see this video, I feel even worse when I think about what could happen if a McCain-Palin government were to become a reality. This is exactly why we as thinking people (black, white, purple, whatever our “color” might be) need to stand up and be counted. Voting and choosing our leadership is only a right as long as we exercise it, and I see hard times ahead if we don’t.

Chris and Lara–thank you both for your very thoughtful and candid comments. This was not an easy topic and I appreciate your stepping out to share thoughts many of us have but may not voice. Bottom line is we can all share our thoughts on election day as we vote our conscience and hopefully bring in a new era of leadership.
