Just Because You’re Afraid of It Doesn’t Make It Real

The anniversary of 911 is next week. And already there’s “chatter” of terrorism and I’m not talking about from al Qaida or Osama Bin Laden (OBL). Oh that’s there too. According to news reports, OBL has made yet another cameo appearance calculated I’m sure to strike fear in our hearts. Well, OBL– take a commercial break. We’ve got the fear thing covered.
As Americans remember, memorialize and relive the tragedy and fear of what happened 6 years ago, we create our own chatter about terrorism. In fact, with all the 911 anniversary coverage coming at us over the next week, there are those who may fear another attack. But just because we’re afraid of it doesn’t make it real.
I may be out in left field here, but I sometimes wonder if the plan of OBL and crowd is to simply keep the fear alive. Do they really need to execute on a terrorist plot to keep us afraid or do they just need to keep us afraid? Fear is such a powerful influence. We use it so effectively on ourselves that it’s not surprising that someone wants to use it right back at us.
If you’re in midlife, I’m sure you’ve faced a fear or two–maybe fear of a major transition like changing careers or taking on something new. And I’m sure you noticed that fear has a way of impeding your progress. Just this week, my chatter about my first posting for this blog kept me from getting it done for a while. It may sound silly but I had that nagging fear that it wouldn’t be good enough. Finally I turned off the chatter, wrote the posting, got over myself and the fear. It just wasn’t real.
So what are you afraid of that is keeping you from moving forward in life?

I agree. I think that life is an adventure that requires us to overcome our fears and move to the next challenge. Whether it be a new job, relationship, or other personal challenge, those of us that have experienced great accomplishments have been those that have taken the greatest risks.

tr6–
You are so right. That’s why I keep reminding myself that the fear is a just a feeling, not my reality.
