George Carlin on Stuff

Posted on 24. Jun, 2008 by Karen in Misc

I don’t know about you but I just loved listening to irreverent anti-establishment comedian George Carlin who died yesterday at age 71. His ability to turn a crude phrase hilarious and thought-provoking at the same time made him one of the most popular comics of our Boomer generation.

Carlin never cleaned up his act. In fact, he made swearing into an art form as he used expletives undeleted to get his point across. Cussing up a storm in his routine “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television” ultimately made him the poster child for a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that resulted in decency rules for television and radio.

As you might imagine, there are a lot of his videos floating around on the Internet as people watch and laugh one more time, reluctant to let go of such talent. I found this 5 minute video where Carlin is talking about “stuff”. It struck me that this is one of the issues of midlife — we start examining our stuff. Is is running our lives? Do we have enough? Do we have too much? Where do we put it all? Do we get rid of it?

It made me start looking around my place at all my stuff. And motivated by Carlin’s comic genius or the loss of it, I took immediate action. I cleaned out my refrigerator.

Now that may not be the most comprehensive step to take, but you should see how much “stuff” I pulled out of my fridge. I like to think, wherever he is, Carlin is thinking — “it’s a good *#@$&!% start for a midlife coach”.

Now here’s the late great George Carlin on stuff:
