Funerals and Midlife–The New Meet and Greet?

Posted on 13. Nov, 2007 by Karen in Misc

I went to a funeral for a dear friend last week.  Well, actually there was more than the funeral.  I went to the funeral home for the viewing–and my personal good-bye.  Then there was the family hour which was actually an entire evening.  The funeral was the next morning and stretched through the afternoon with the service, procession to the cemetery and a meal afterward.  Part of this two days of remembering a special person included the reunion of old friends, many in midlife or older.

To a person, everyone I saw who I hadn’t seen in a while said "it’s so sad that we all reconnect only at such sad times."  I said it myself, over and over.  Is it that we all get so busy with our lives that the only time we take time out to see old friends is when someone dies?  Is is a condition of midlife that funerals become the new meet and greet?
