Fireworks for the 4th – Kitty-Style

Posted on 03. Jul, 2008 by Karen in Misc

As the rest of you get ready for the 4th of July, fireworks are already going off at my house!  And it’s happening kitty-style.  My 2 cats, Bijou and Coco Puff are still not getting along.  In fact, it’s worse than what I shared with you last week.  They went to war.  So for the last 4 days, the “girls” have been separated –Bijou in the basement and Puff in the bathroom.  We’re all hating it.

This week, I’ve been consulting with the vet, kitty experts and even considering whether I should adopt one of the girls out.  I mean they just seem to hate one another.  But after a hour conversation with the kitty behavioral specialist at my vet’s, we’re trying an alternative.  Don’t laugh — it’s kitty Prozac.  Yes, really, Prozac complete with prescriptions and the pharmacist asking if I was Bijou.  What I do for my pets!

But hey, I’m in midlife, I’m single, my son is grown and I don’t have grandchildren hanging around yet.  I have to have someone to talk to — I’m an extrovert.  I wouldn’t say I’m turning into an eccentric cat lady or anything but the girls are usually pleasant company.

So if it takes Prozac to get us back to our usual rhythm in this house, then I’m game.  The only thing is that the vet says it takes several weeks to really kick in.  OMG.  Wish me luck and any cat owner advice will be greatly appreciated.

P.S.  Oh and if you’re wondering, no I’m not dipping into the kitty Prozac for myself.  Yet.

  1. I don’t think anyone would much blame ya if you dipped a little until it kicks in on the “girls”. Good luck and if you need a Xanax, just holla.
Hope you have a great Independence Day!!

Janie–Since it’s almost the 4th, a Margarita might be the solution! You have a great holiday too. By the way, Allison over at Women Bloom.com was just asking if I’d seen your site. Another fan.

Sue Ellen — Thanks but there’s not a lot of laughing going on around here. But the holiday was great and I hope yours was too!

Oh no! Poor you! And poor kitties! I have heard of kitty Prozac – my hubby’s kitty was psychotic, nearly taking a piece of his face one scary evening. I wish you the best in this challenging time.

Thanks Margaret. Maybe I need nanny goats instead of cats — the thought is crossing my mind but I know that this too shall pass. Hope you had a great 4th.

Well hopefully the ‘girls’ will start getting along soon! My friend has the same trouble with one of her cats. Once her or her brother get back from the vet–it’s like there’s a whole new cat in the house?!?! I luckily have not had this problem with mine yet! Other than the occasional wrestling match– they get along great. Also as a single girl with no kids– I think they are great entertainment & company! I know just watching them sometimes-they just crack me up!!! Have a great day!!!!!!

Well, I’m the friend Stacey was referring to. It takes a long time for them to be brother and sister again when I take either one to the vet. It’s very fustrating. But I can tell you it gets better. I found rubbing them with my own clothes after wearing them for the day helps. Odd I know :)
But 1-2 weeks for the house to be back to normal was normal and those weeks were hell for all of us!
Good luck and it will get better!
BTW, love your blog. Stacey turned me on to it a few months ago and I can’t stop reading. My grandmother has alzheimers and I pass on a lot of your advice to my mom. Thanks for your help!

    Stacey–

I hope you’re right about the cats. They are a lot of fun when they’re getting along. Thanks for the encouragement. I needed that!

    Heather—

Glad to hear that Stacey brought you over to Midlife’s A Trip. She’s the best. It’s comforting to hear that other people have lunatic cats–even if just temporarily. It’s also good to hear that my posts on Alzheimer’s and caregiving are helpful. I’ll be writing more on those topics.
