Chez Down Camp

When you vacation with the Peanut — my 4-year old niece, you see a lot of hot dogs.  The Peanut is crazy about them.  She likes them sans buns with ketchup.  So to be a good traveling buddy, you have to accommodate the Peanut on her taste for hot dogs — at least some of the time.

So today we all trooped into the quaint, historic town of Rockport, Massachusetts where we had lunch at local fave — the Top Dog.  Billed by it’s owners as “quite possibly America’s favorite hot dog”, it was a campy hole in the wall with an awesome array of doggies.  The menu includes the:

  • Purebred
  • Doggoned Deal
  • Man’s Best Friend
  • German Shepherd
  • Chihuahua
  • Bloodhound
  • Seeing Eye Dog
  • Boston Terrier
  • Italian Greyhound
  • Shaggy Dog
  • Bad Dog
  • Golden Retriever
  • Mutt
  • Junkyard Dog and
  • Other faves such as fried clams, French fries, lobster rolls and “Grammy’s” potato salad — special because I used to call my grandmother “Grammy”.

Now lest you think that we have a limited menu at Down Camp because of the Peanut, think again.  Last night, “Chef” Kevin fixed a delicious Portuguese seafood stew called “cioppino”.  It had a flavorful tomato base broth filled to the brim with mussels, shrimp, linguica (a Portuguese sausage), potatoes and, of course, the ingredient of the day — saffron.  What a great time we all had sitting around the dining table, sopping stew, talking stuff and looking out onto beautiful Cape Ann.

Tonight’s dinner promises to be equally tasty.  We’re having Chef Kevin’s Beer Can Chicken, corn on the cob, and blueberry/peach cobbler made from scratch by my sister, the esteemed “Meno Mom”.  You may wonder how I’ll fit into my plane seat on the ride back home after eating all these great meals at Chez Down Camp.

Believe me – I’m wondering the same thing.

I’ve been enjoying (immensely) your reports from Down Camp. You’re so lucky to have relatives who are Host and Hostess with the Mostest.
The scenery is beautiful, you’re keeping great company, and OMG! THE FOOD!!

b–Down Camp is such a wonderful place. It’s so peaceful here sometimes. This morning I watched people out digging for clams in the mud flats that are exposed when the tide goes out in the cove right behind Down Camp. Now the tide is coming in—what an amazing phenomenon. In a couple of hours you could swim where people were walking this morning. All told, Down Camp with our friends, great food and beautiful ambiance is too special.

Wendy–I took the picture with my little digital and am pretty impressed with myself–and the camera! I’m not known for being the great photographer but this camera makes it easy. Looks like you’ll have to bring Bruce to Cape Ann for a visit.
