Can You Recover from Being a Control Freak?

Over the past 24 hours, I’ve been on the phone for 5 of those troubleshooting a problem with my telephone. Since I rely heavily on the phone and computer as tools for my life coaching practice, it’s an understatement to say that I was stressed out by the situation. The problem for me was three-fold–
- Not knowing how to fix it,
- Having to depend on someone else for the fix and
- Being patient.
All this relates directly to my being a control freak in recovery. Actually I’ve come a long way in letting things just unfold in life but yesterday was a true test. My tech skills are OK but I had no clue on how to fix the problem. So I had to call someone else and be patient while they figured it all out. Every fiber of me wanted to be in control but obviously I couldn’t.
At one point it seemed that the problem was fixed but then both the phone and Internet access went out. I started to call for help again but realized that it was time to just step back and let it all go for a while. And I did. I picked up the scarf that I’m knitting, turn on the TV, propped up in bed and let all that tech stuff fade into the background.
This morning I got up at 5:30am, called the tech center again. I pleased to report that everything works again. The lesson from this situation was that the point when the problem seemed the worse is the point when I was trying to exercise control or was frustrated because I couldn’t. I got it. I also got that you can recover from being a control freak—one day at a time.

Karen –
My control freak issues are more related to the auto – I hate computers (a necessary evil). I kept a car 11 years because I was compelled to correct problems and learn by those problems. I absolutely had to know how a part worked and how to correct the problem should the part fail. After 267,000 miles my problem ended. I gave the Auto away. Well once again with my new auto, technicians are claiming “transmission” problems…NO WAY. I found out I only need a small PCS valve which is housed inside the transmission…..another symptom of my out of control freak issues (being taken advantage of) …….much better though because I am selling this car in the summer…!
