Behind the Scenes with Obama and His Volunteers

Make no mistake about it — I’m thrilled that Senator Obama is the Democratic candidate for president. I never thought I’d see the day when an African American would have the opportunity to lead this country. I just wish my dad were alive to see this. He would have been as proud of Obama as if the senator were his own son.
I remember the first time I saw Obama speak. I was sitting in my living room watching the Democratic National Convention waiting for my state’s governor, Jennifer Granholm to take the podium. But before she came on, this Black man was introduced and he had me from “Hello, my name is Barack Obama.” By the time he ended his speech, I was standing in my living room cheering out loud. I knew then that he would be president. I believe it still.
Senator Obama said something recently to his volunteers at his campaign HQ in Chicago that gave me further pause to consider his merits. Obama told this group who have worked tirelessly on his campaign that they were discovering their:
Collective ability to make history and move and entire nation in a new direction. And that is a remarkable feat — an astonishing feat … I hope you think about what you have done and understand that it’s not because of the candidate but it’s because of you.
