A Nightmare in September

Posted on 11. Sep, 2008 by Karen in Misc

That morning I was watching a Matt Lauer interview on the Today show. I was just about ready to walk out the door headed for work. All of a sudden, Matt cupped his hand to his ear and said there was breaking news. A plane had hit the World Trade Center.

I sat at the foot of my bed and watched as the commentators talked back and forth trying to figure out what happened. And as they questioned one another–rapid fire back and forth, I watched the seond plane hit the World Trade Center. I couldn’t move as this hideous drama played out on the screen.

My phone started ringing off the hook, people from the office, my family, friends–everyone in shock, disbelief and horror. And then, if there could be anything more unthinkable than what had already occurred, I watched the towers of the WTC, crumble–almost as if in slow motion. I started crying, feeling like so many others the helplessness of being unable to do anything to stop the tragedy that was unfolding right before our eyes.

Where were you on that tragic September 11th?

Karen, I didn’t want to watch it again…to feel what I felt that day again. But I did watch it then (with my small children playing at my feet) and just now. And it felt the same. Thank you for reminding me of how we all suffered that day. I am reading Obama’s The Audacity of Hope right now…his is a vision of healing. My prayer is that he can lead this world to a more peaceful condition, for all of us.

Chris–I think the tragedy of 911 has only one good side–it reminds us that out of the darkness comes hope that we can have a society without war–fought by soldiers or terrorists. Obama represents that hope for me too. Thanks for sharing your feelings.
