A Day of Positive Vibes

This past Sunday, there was a rally in Detroit for presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. I was lucky to get 4 tickets at the 11th hour and turned the outing into a family event with my sister, my cousin who was in town and, of course, my 4 year old niece, the “Peanut”.
It was a beautiful fall day as we stood in the crowd for more than 2 hours waiting for the candidates to appear with their wives. But who cares! The people around us were amazing, the energy was so positive in these chaotic times and when they arrived — Barack and Joe’s remarks had us mesmerized! But enough said. You can see for yourself:
Me with my sister and the Peanut.
7 month old Shelby dazzling in pink and her baby bumper sticker.
Barack on moving out of the darkness.
And in the end, whether you plan to vote for Barack and Joe or not — it was a day of positive vibes.
We all needed that.

That positive vibe feeling is happening here too! We went to a big rally of families for Obama/Biden a few weekends ago and I was so impressed by the spirit of the crowd and the women I met who organized the event (2 young mothers who put it together as an extension of their playgroup gatherings.) Their effort resulted in hundreds gathered: local speakers, the head of the VA DNC, local bands, and galvanizing a new crew of volunteers for the campaign. We’re keeping our fingers crossed, saying our prayers, whatever it takes, here in Virginia.

I’m heading back to Winchester, VA with a number of the folks from DC who I went there with by bus two weekends back. We’d been cautioned that Winchester was a staunchly Republican area of VA and were prepared for a lot of rejection, but the overwhelming number of people my team spoke with were all firmly in the Obama camp. It helps that Obama and Biden’s campaign in VA is closely linked to that of Senatorial candidate (and popular former Governor) Mark Warner, but at one house we canvassed the wife answered the door telling us that she was a McCain supporter and not to bother her again…but before we got out of her yard her husband was at the door saying he was very much an Obama supporter!!! Young and old, black and white, the folks we interacted with were very much in favor of change and a new direction for our country. They realize that only one candidate is promising that sort of change and we are all being energized by it!

Chris–I know what you mean about the crowds at the rally. The people around us were so amazing–diverse yet united in a comfortable family kind of way. It’s not something I’ve seen since the Kennedy days. Just hope it lasts. I’ll send prayers to Virginia if you send some back to Michigan. Even though McCain pulled out here, we can’t take anything for granted.
Rod–sounds like Virginia is the place to be this election. Are you going back to work during the election? I just volunteered to with the attorneys on election day. Can’t wait to get my assignment.
